Kamakura is historically the first city governed by the Samurai. Please take it as an opportunity to feel and understand the soul of Bushi through Karate by staying in Kamakura, an ancient city of Samurai family.

☆Destination of Tenshinjuku

Karate, born in Okinawa, has spread all over the world, and will be adopted as one of the events in Olympic games in 2020. However competition, which used to be one way of introducing this “Bujutsu”, has become Karate itself, which is causing the loss of Karate’s prior feature. Winning Karate match is becoming a competitive sport, and it seems the importance of real Kihon(=Karate basis) and its concept are forgotten.

For instance, “Maki-wara-tsuki” is an important practice to keep an accurate strong “tsuki”, but among some of the Karate players, they prefer “not to do “Makiwara” because it lowers the speed of action. The idea is “how fast it will be to reach the opponent”, but not “how strong and efficiently it could reach”.

l myself practice Maki-wari-tsuki as an important speed training.

As long as Karate is Budo, its purpose is to defeat the opponent without arms. And for that, it is important to show 120% of one’s feat with accurate Kihon(=basis)and latent ability using physical handling. This “Kihon” is what Tenshinjuku thoroughly regards to.

lt might seem against the stream, but no matter what field we belong to, an adept is created through this continuous simple basic practicing.

Tenshinjuku takes importance “to master thoroughly the body control of oneself”. Before facing the opponent, it is very important to be able to manipulate one’s body correctly within one’s conscious through endless basic practice, which should lead to “ougi( secret behind)”.

The repetition of basic practice is Karate itself, and the soul.

For this reason, a real match should be done between the players who are able to control and manipulate their body to reach “an instant feat as well as offensive and defensive spirit”.

This is the real Budo match, and not the kind of game scrambling points.

☆As Bujutsu and art of self-defense.

Karate resembles to Japanese sword, originally meaning an art to kill and wound man. But, actually now a days, just like sword, one must never use it. However it can act as a control, because a sword back in a sheath actually is ready to sharply cut any moment. lt could all be applied to Karate to be prepared to cut once the sword is out of the sheath. Never could it be used, but always brush up the feat, and be ready any moment. This is where the secret principle, ”win without actually fighting” lies. This is the spirit of “ no first move for Karate”.

☆Master “Kata”

“Kata” is a unique practice system of Japanese traditional entertainment and Bujutsu, as well as for Karate, an endless manipulation of feat, facing oneself and imagining the opponent. Then the movement sharpens up, and more the feat leads to the instant killing power, the beauty of the space appears.

☆No retirement for Budo.

ln the world of competition, there is retirement, but not for Budo. There is Karate for the 20’s as well for 70’s. Tenshinjuku spirit “life long Karate” equals to “life long Budo”.

☆Continuation brings strength.

Recently, everybody is looking for a speedy result, while Karate is not a fashion, and concentrates on repeating simple basic practice, and the soul. To create something satisfying, it needs time to reach.

☆Be in good health and lead a fulfilling life.

Without saying, one must stay in good health doing Karate. Karate is not to hurt one’s body, but to lead a healthy and fulfilling life, and this is what “Tenshinjuku long life Karate Do” is for.

Practicing means start learning from 1 to understand 10, then return from 10 to the beginning 1.

This is a “Doh-Ka(poem)” by Sen-no-Rikyuu(*), which represents precisely the practice of Budo. There is no end to Doh, and it is an eternal subject for the Tenshinjuku members to master “Heian Shodan” and “Tekki Shodan”, no matter how high the level “Dan” or “Kyu” may be.
